The Master of Science in Speech and Language Pathology is pursues to prepare competent professionals to provide clinical services to children and adults with communication disorders as well to prepare them to work in supervision and consulting.

The program requires 60 credits of coursework, 350 hours of clinical practicum, and comprehensive examination or thesis project. The program requirements are in compliance with Puerto Rico licensing board.

KEY ADVANTAGES / BENEFITS

The primary goal of the Speech and Language Pathology Program is to provide students a comprehensive knowledge base and appropriate attitudes and clinical skills needed to work in prevention, assessment and treatment of children and adults with communication disorders.

The specific training competencies as evidenced by the Speech and Language Pathology graduates are the following:

Knowledge skills

- Mastery of the speech and language pathologies in children and adults, as well as the    intervention/therapeutic techniques used in the treatment of such conditions.

- Mastery of the assessment tools (formal and informal) used to assess children and adults with    communication disorders.

- Base therapeutic intervention in theory and research.

Clinical skills

- Base diagnosis of communication disorders in children and adults using results of tests    administered.

- Design and implement intervention techniques according to client's level of functioning and needs.

- Use procedures, strategies and assessment tools to identify and make client referrals.

- Use technology as a tool to provide services to clients with communication disorders.

- Provide guidance to general population about communication disorders prevention.

- Perform supervision and consulting roles in different clinical service settings.

- Perform research in the Speech/Language Pathology field, that can be applied in the design and    implementation of intervention programs with children and adults with communication disorders.

- Administering and interpreting results of standardized tests that are uses in the assessment of    children and adults with communication disorders.

Attitudes

- Perform clinical functions under ethical standards that underlie the profession.

- Have a holistic view of the human being.

- Contribute to the development of the profession through active participation in professional    organizations.

- Assume responsibilities that underlies the practice of the profession.
